# Fashion Design Portfolio: What Belongs In It A fashion design portfolio is a presentation of your design thinking and making ability. It shows how you take an idea — a mood, a theme, a problem — and turn it into garments. For schools, jobs and clients, the portfolio is the primary evidence of who you are as a designer. ## What it must contain Strong fashion portfolios show both **process** and **product**: - **Design development.** Mood boards, research, sketches, fabric and colour exploration. - **Garment construction.** Toiles, draping, technical drawings, finished garments. - **Presentation.** Lookbook images, flat drawings, editorial photography of the work. - **Your point of view.** A clear aesthetic thread that connects the work. ## Process matters more than people expect Reviewers at fashion schools and studios want to see how you think, not just how things look. A page showing your research-to-design journey is more persuasive than a page of polished final images alone. Include: - initial sketches, even rough ones - fabric swatches and colour studies - how you resolved construction problems - iterations and edits ## What to leave out - A single finished look with no context - Copies of other designers' work presented as your own - Fits and sketches with no labels or explanation - More pages than the work supports ## Structure that works 1. **Cover and intro** — name, your design identity in a sentence. 2. **A strong first project** — your best, most complete work. 3. **Development projects** — process-heavy pieces that show range. 4. **Technical work** — flats, specs, construction where you have it. 5. **Contact** — clear and easy to find. ## The standard is consistency Whatever your aesthetic, the presentation should be consistent: one layout system, one level of finish, one clear voice.
