Portfolio, comp card and digitals do different jobs. Here is what each is for, what goes inside it, and when agencies or casting teams use it.
Model Portfolio vs Comp Card vs Digitals: What You Actually Need
New models often hear three pieces of advice:
“Build your portfolio.”
“Bring a comp card.”
“Send digitals.”
They are not three names for the same thing.
The portfolio
Purpose: show range, quality and the kinds of work you can perform.
A modeling portfolio can be a physical book, an online gallery or both.
It can contain:
- clean portrait
- full-body images
- commercial/lifestyle work
- editorial work
- beauty
- movement/location images
- published or campaign work as your career grows
A developed portfolio is curated. It is not every photograph you have ever taken.
Think: the evidence library.
The comp card
Purpose: provide a fast casting reference.
A comp card (composite card, zed card, Z-card or sed card) typically includes:
- a strong lead portrait
- several additional images
- measurements
- hair/eye colour
- contact or agency information
Backstage describes it as an abridged version of the portfolio. ModelManagement calls it an essential model tool and notes that representatives often use it when presenting models for castings.
Think: the business card.
Digitals / Polaroids
Purpose: show your natural, current appearance.
Digitals are simple images with minimal styling and editing.
They commonly include:
- headshot
- profile
- three-quarter
- full-body
- other agency-requested angles
Their usefulness comes from being current and honest.
Think: the reality check.
Which one does a beginner need first?
Usually:
- current digitals
- accurate measurements/profile
- a simple portfolio or online profile
- a comp card when useful for your target agencies/castings
The order can vary. Follow actual submission instructions.
A beginner does not need to spend thousands before sending a first application.
Which one should an all-in-one modeling product create?
All three—but not by treating them identically.
A good system could generate:
Portfolio
Curated creative images, sequencing, online gallery and downloadable PDF.
Comp card
Automatically populated from selected portfolio images, measurements and contact data.
Digitals pack
Organized from the model’s real current photographs, with safe cropping/layout and perhaps simple exposure correction.
The digitals should not be generatively transformed into a different face or body. Doing so removes the reason agencies ask for them.
Why this distinction is commercially useful
Many tools solve presentation but not career workflow.
If the same profile data can produce:
- portfolio page
- PDF book
- comp card
- digitals sheet
- agency submission links
the user enters measurements and selects photographs once.
That is a much stronger product than a generic image generator.
