Fashion Portfolio PDF: Format, Size and Export Guide

The PDF is the standard deliverable for fashion portfolio applications. A portfolio that opens fast and renders cleanly on any device gives you a real advantage.

Page size

Common choices:

• A4 (210 × 297 mm) — standard outside North America.
• Letter (8.5 × 11 in) — common in North America.
• Square (e.g. 12 × 12 in or A4-square) — very common in fashion portfolios; reads well on screens and prints beautifully.

If the application specifies a size, use it. Otherwise pick one and stay consistent.

Image resolution and quality

• Export images at 150–200 DPI for the layout — enough for print, light enough for email.
• Photograph garments properly: even light, clean backgrounds, consistent angles.
• Do not upscale low-resolution images.

File size

Application systems typically cap uploads at 10–25 MB. Keep the file lean:

• compress images to the resolution the layout needs
• avoid full-bleed heavy images on every page
• flatten layers before export

Under 10 MB is a good target for a standard portfolio.

Export settings that matter

• Fonts embedded
• Fixed page size throughout
• No password protection
• A clickable contents page if the portfolio is long

Print vs digital

If you print the portfolio (common for portfolio reviews and interviews), keep a print version with bleed and full resolution. The digital PDF for applications stays small and fast. Many designers now use a website as the primary portfolio and the PDF as the application copy.

Check before you send

• Open it on a phone and a laptop — does it look right?
• Confirm no images are missing or blurry.
• Send it to yourself and test the download.
• Check the file name: yourname-fashion-portfolio.pdf, not final_FINAL2.pdf.
